San Diego Chargers

My family consists of some "through thick and thin" Charger fans. Giggy even was a training camp hostess at the University of California, Irvine during the summer of 69! Yes, even I've gone to a game or two in my lifetime over at the Murph aka Qualcomm Stadium. Now that they're Division Champs we see more and more fans coming out of the woodwork.
Even if the Chargers don't make it to the Superbowl, they've done Charger fans worldwide(??!) proud this year! Still, as you can see, Giggy and my brother started instilling Bolt pride in K. and D. from the start!
K. even sings the ever exciting, "San Diego, Super Chaaaaaaaaargers!"

Celebrating the New Year

The extended family (including friends Shannon Jr., P. & S) celebrated the new year by going to a local Chinese buffet for dinner and horn blowing! Shannon Jr. impressed us all with her knowledge of the history of the Great Wall and China's contributions of the compass, silk and kites. K. chimed in that Big Bird was there! Also, the Monkey King was on the Great Wall. (Thank you Big Bird Goes to China!) The lady who served our drinks was very kind to the girls and tried to teach them "Happy New Year" in Chinese. She even gave them chopsticks held together with a rubber band and encouraged them to try them out. We were all impressed with their chopstick skills, especially when eating the hands down favorite, jello cubes! Looking forward to the next New Year's Eve night out when Baby D can forgo the formula for a jello square or two and Ellie will be with us too!

Sidenotes:
Found this "blog summary" of Big Bird Goes to China. Had a few giggles.
Interesting chopstick info from Wikipedia (my possible travel mates take note!):
It is important to note that the chopsticks are used in a large geographic area. While principles of etiquette are similar, the finer points may differ from region to region, and there is no single standard for the use of chopsticks. Generally, chopsticks etiquette is similar to general Western etiquette regarding eating utensils.
•Never wave your chopsticks around as if it was an extension of your hand gestures, bang them like drumsticks, or use them to move bowls or plates.
•Decide what to pick up before reaching with chopsticks (do not hover around or poke looking for special ingredients). After you have picked up an item, do not put it back in the dish.
•When picking up a piece of food, never use the tips of your chopsticks to poke through the food as if you were using a fork. Exceptions include tearing larger items apart such as vegetables and kimchi. In informal use, small, difficult to pick-up items such as cherry tomatoes or fishballs may be stabbed but this use is frowned upon by traditionalists.
•Chopsticks can be rested horizontally on one's plate or bowl to keep them off the table entirely. A chopstick rest can also be used to keep the points off the table.
•In Chinese culture, it is normal to have your lips touching the edge of the rice bowl and using chopsticks to push rice directly into the mouth. In Korean culture, it is rude to pick the rice bowl off of the table and eat from it.
•In Chinese and Japanese etiquette, the blunt end is sometimes used to transfer food from a common dish to your own plate or bowl (never your mouth). In Korea, the blunt handle end is not considered sanitary.
•Never stab chopsticks into a bowl of rice, leaving them standing upwards. Any stick-like object pointed upwards resembles the incense sticks that some Asians use as offerings to deceased family members.

Chinese etiquette
•Chinese traditionally eat rice from a small bowl held in the left hand. The rice bowl is raised to the mouth and the rice pushed into the mouth using the chopsticks. Some Chinese find it offensive to scoop rice from the bowl using a spoon. If rice is served on a plate, as is more common in the West, it is acceptable and more practical to eat it with a fork or spoon.
•A set of chopsticks are one of the wedding gifts normally presented to Chinese newlyweds as the Chinese words for "chopsticks" and "to bear a son soon" sound the same.
•It is acceptable to transfer food to people who have a close relation with you (e.g. parents, grandparents, children or significant others) if you notice they are having difficulty picking up the food. Also it is a sign of respect to pass food to the elderly first before the dinner starts (part of the Confucian tradition of respecting seniors).
•When communal chopsticks are supplied with shared plates of food, it is considered impolite to use your own chopsticks to pick up the food from the shared plate or eat using the communal chopsticks.

Environmental impact
In China alone, an estimated 45 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks are used and thrown away annually. This adds up to 1.7 million cubic metres of timber or 25 million fully grown trees every year. To encourage that people use and throw away less, as of April 2006 a five percent tax is added to the price of chopsticks. This measure is part of the first tax package in 12 years.

Oh and it's a faux pas to wear them in your hair. Oops.

Happy New Year!

Yin and Yang

According to my exciting new book, The Oracle Dragon, "Yin and yang are complementary but opposite aspects of the one energy, chi. Whatever form the chi energy is expressing now is inevitably going to reach a limit from which it will fall into its opposite form of expression, only to repeat the cycle again and again, constantly changing from yin to yang and back again in a never ending cycle."
I'm thinkin' that this referral slowdown has just about reached my limit and it should reverse. My question is, how can we "help" this chi to reverse itself?!What?? That's not the way it works??!! Hhhhmmmmph! Next book, please!! =)

Ever the pessimist, I'm "hoping" I travel during Christmas to be united with Ellie before 2008. Prove me wrong, CCAA, Puh-leez!! =)

K tearing it up!

Beautiful ballerina!

Craziness at Chuck E Cheese! Thanks to Carly, Shannon Jr. and Megan for joining us!

Ok, so this one's not a birthday picture, but I couldn't resist!! And don't worry, you haven't been online so long that it's now 2007! The camera date must be wrong!

I've been cleaning today the local radio station has been playing songs A-Z. It's been "B's" pretty much all day. Just too cool to hear some of these songs! Just a recent sampling:
Big in Japan-Alphaville
Biggest Part Of Me -Ambrosia
Billie Jean- David Bowie
Blame it on the Rain - Milli Vanilli
Blitzkrieg Bop- Ramones
Born to Run -Bruce
Born in the USA-Bruce
Born to be my Baby- Bon Jovi
Brain Damage And Eclipse - Pink Floyd
Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass
Brass in Pocket - Pretenders
Brass Monkey - Beastie Boys
Break it Down -Tears for Fears
Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder
Break on Through- Doors
Breakdown-Tom Petty
Breakfast in America- Supertramp
Earlier in the Day I heard Beat's So Lonely by Charlie Sexton...sigh....

I've gotta break out some of my old records...I think I read somewhere that students graduating from college in 2007 are familiar only with CD's. I know they sound better, but the vinyl was such a part of my youth! =)

Can you tell I'm procrastinating? I'm so over cleaning!

Officially

...on Winter Break now. I feel so relaxed already! I stayed up until 10:30 (whoa!) and slept in this morning. What a life! Especially excited because with no school, I didn't have to do bus duty!! That hour every morning just wears me out. Anyway, I figured it was time to update.

A million thanks to CARI, my February DTC Secret Pal. She has been a fabulous pal and friend over the past 10 months. The Secret Pal gifts and messages she has sent are truly appreciated.

This months package arrived Wednesday. Look at all the treats!

The "I Never Forget a Face Game" has a best toy award and I hope to give it a whirl with K this week. The jade love charm made me smile, as I previously noted I had lost my love charm off my bracelet! I'll let ya'll know if the jade does "attract" some love! =0 The China adoption magnetic words are so fun, the sweet little photo book I can't wait to fill up! So many goodies! And if you look carefully, Cari's family is pictured on their Christmas card! Cari, we are all pulling for another picture on your family card for next year!

Thank you so much for all your thoughtfulness and generosity, Cari!

I've had the chance to babysit my 2 month old nephew a few times over the past weeks. Here is a pictorial update on his cuteness!

Yesterday I went with the 4th graders to visit our local Channel 13. The kids (and adults!) had pictures taken at the anchor desk and played around with the green weather screen. The kids enjoyed using an extra green cloth to make it look like they were bobbing heads, but I got to "do the weather"...I think I missed my calling! We all marveled at the man earning $500 dollars/15 minutes by fixing a camera 500 feet up on the broadcast tower! All of our eyes lit up on that figure! I really think he earns every penny! The station also treated us to lunch across from the broadcast room, during the broadcast. And we chatted with meteorologist Craig Moeller. You just know the kids called him by his competition's name a few times! The kids left with stockings stuffed-with-goodies. Really royal! I'm trying to work this scanner again to show my picture at the anchor desk. Scanner operation...new years resolution.

I noticed that I began this blog on 20 December 2005, right before I went to get fingerprinted (with Flat Stanley). I really didn't think I would be blogging about anything and everything *but* Elena for a whole year and more. Thank to all my family, friends, and lurkers(!) who are still hanging in there and checking in with me!

Off to get ready for my day at the movies or aquarium with Kaitlin now!

Stuff

10 months down since LID. Hoping that I'm definitely over halfway in this extended paper pregnancy.

Thankfully I had no power over the last few days! My lights had been flickering over the past week, no fuses blown. My wonderful landlords called in the electrician and were informed that I use so much power (must be the darn computer on all day and night!) that wires had melted and even parts of the meter were bubbled and melted. We were all very lucky that there wasn't a fire. The electrician told us that houses weren't originally wired for the amount of electricity we are used to these days! Luckily they were able to rewire everything and let me borrow a meter til Monday. Bumping into objects in the dark gets old pretty quick! I really feel for the people who have lost their power due to storms over the past week. Being in the dark AND freezing cold must be horrible.

Got this fun video today. My learn Chinese with the Rosetta Stone method is going very slowly. Thought I'd try out the Dance and Learn with Mei-Mei way! Twinkle twinkle little star, anyone? I'm kinda hooked on that Pulling the Carrot song!

Also, this time of the year is usually hectic, but hopefully full of joy and cheer. But some of my close friends are dealing with difficult situations right now. So I just want to let Mary, Amanda and Angie know I'm thinking about them and sending them lots of love and prayers.

Now come on stork!!!

The Big CCAA Meeting

Well, did we really think anything good would be revealed at this meeting? At the most, I figured we would hear nada. Too bad that wasn't so. Agencies are now revealing that the CCAA has 2 times as many dossiers as children available for International Adoption. New requirements will definitely cut down on new dossiers. At this point I would not be able to apply as a single person. I should, however, be able to continue this adoption. I have questioned this journey a lot over the last two days. I understand...and at the same time, do not understand...China's new restrictions. I certainly hope that the orphanages are, as China declares, not full of babies.
New Info:
Married couples only. No singles starting May 2007.
New marriage/divorce time restrictons.
Parents must be 30 to 50 years old.
No history of infectious disease, mental illness (including depression and anxiety), blindness, and/or serious disease or disability.
Parents must have a BMI under 40.
Net assets must be over $80,000
No criminal record.
There will be an increase in fees.

Pearl Harbor December 7

In remembrance of all who died that day. And in honor of my grandfather, a Pearl Harbor Survivor, who was in charge of the starboard ammunition handling passageway hoists and conveyor belts onboard the USS MARYLAND.

Shout Outs

Cheers to Giggy (my Mom) and Lenox! They made my day...ok, quite possibly my week! I recently posted that I had lost the Love charm on my Good Fortune Bracelet. Well, my Mom called Lenox to see if they had a charm she could buy as a replacement. The customer service rep told her that she would send a replacement bracelet and we could send the charm-challenged bracelet back!!!! How awesome is that?!! I will be writing a very complimentary and thankful letter to the Lenox Company this weekend.
Oh, and I'm going to make sure all of these charms are on good and tight.
Thanks for calling, Mom!
I gots Love again!
